Biden has spent a QUARTER of his first 365 days in office at his Delaware homes

President Joe Biden has spent more than a quarter of his first year in the White House in his home state of Delaware and half of his weekends.

Biden logged 99 days in Delaware, according to a count by the Associated Press, and spent half his weekends there – 26 out of 52, according to a count by Mark Knoller, the former CBS News White House correspondent who tracks presidential travel. That includes time at his home in Wilmington and the family beach house in Rehoboth.

The president has only spent 10 weekends at the White House. He also favors Camp David, the presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains, spending 13 weekends there.

‘The president goes to Delaware because it’s his home. It’s also where his son and his former wife are buried, and it’s a place that is obviously close to his heart. A lot of presidents go visit their home when they’re president,’ White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in her briefing on Tuesday.

Biden’s eldest Beau, who died of brain cancer in 2015, is buried at in the graveyard at St. Joseph on the Brandywine, the Catholic Church that Biden attends when he is Wilmington.

The president’s first wife Neilia and one-year-old daughter Naomi were killed in an automobile accident on December 18, 1972.

Biden is able to work from his Wilmington home and frequently is in meetings or phone calls while there.

On December 30th he spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin from his Wilmington home. In October, Biden hosted Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Joe Manchin at his Delaware home as he lobbied the West Virginia senator on his Build Back Better bill.

Biden had his Wilmington home custom-built.

In 1996, he purchased four acres of secluded, lakefront land in the upscale suburb of Greenville in Wilmington, Delaware, and built the 6,850-square-foot home.

He purchased the lot for $350,000 and the property is now estimated to be worth more than a $1 million.

In Rehoboth, the Bidens own a 4,786-square-foot home with six bedrooms and five baths. They paid $2.74 million for the house in 2017.

The White House earlier this year defended his travel back to his Delaware home, which was coming during a spike in COVID cases.

‘The president lives in Wilmington; it’s his home. That’s where he’s lived for many, many years. And as you know, as any President of the United States does, he takes a private airplane called ‘Air Force One’ to travel there. That is, of course, a unique — unique from most Americans, but I think most Americans would also see that as a unique circumstance,’ White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in March.

As a senator Biden famously rode the Amtrak home to Wilmington every night. As vice president, he spent most weekends in his home state, often still able to travel by train.

But now he has Marine One and Air Force One instead of Amtrak. And instead of traveling with a small security contingent like he did as veep, he has a massive entourage of aides, Secret Service and press that follow him there.

Biden’s first trip on Air Force One was to Delaware, coming after he had been in office two weeks. The president flew to his home state to pack up some personal item that had not yet gotten moved to the White House.

He’s not the first president to want to escape the trappings of the White House, which Harry Truman famously called the ‘crown jewel of the federal penal system.’

Donald Trump, as president, spent many of his weekends either at his Bedminister golf club in New Jersey or his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Fla.

Biden, during an CNN town hall in February, described the White House as a ‘gilded cage.’

‘I don’t know about you all, but I was raised in a way that you didn’t look for anybody to wait on you,’ he said of the staff in the residence portion of the White House. ‘I find myself extremely self-conscious. There are wonderful people that work at the White House. But someone is standing there and making sure I — hands me my suit coat.’
