How many Champions League trophies have Liverpool and Real Madrid won? Reds have more than Man United, Chelsea and Man City combined and could draw level with AC Milan but Los Blancos are serial winners of the European Cup

Two of the most dominant European sides of all time collide in the Champions League final when Liverpool take on Real Madrid this weekend.

As the most successful trophy-winning teams in their respective countries, England and Spain, this latest showdown in Paris could be a match for the ages.

Liverpool and Real have been crowned European Cup winners on a staggering 19 occasions between them.

The La Liga giants are tournament specialists with 13 titles, while they also hold the superior record during the Champions League era.

Madrid boast seven wins to Liverpool’s two and have five players with more than 100 appearances in the competition – Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, David Alaba, and Marcelo.

Here, runs through these two titan’s history in European football’s grandest prize…

As was the case when they beat Tottenham in 2019, the Reds could win the Champions League despite conceding the Premier League title to Manchester City.

The Merseysiders are six-time European champions, which started with successive wins in the 1976/77 and 1977/78 seasons.

Three years passed before Liverpool lifted the trophy again and tellingly it was a 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the final – which was held in Paris!

The Premier League giants scooped their fourth title in 1983/84 before a two-decade drought proceeded the ‘Miracle of Istanbul’ in 2005.

Should Jurgen Klopp’s team add their second Champions League crown in four seasons then they would level AC Milan in second in the all-time standings.

Los Blancos stars sported ‘All out for number 14’ shirts following their semi-final win over Man City and it’s a mark of how dominant the club have been in this competition.

Madrid are in their eighth final since 1992 – almost twice as many as their rivals Barcelona (five) – and they haven’t lost one for 35 years!

And even though they lost to Liverpool in Paris before, the Spaniards did win the first-ever European Cup final in France’s capital back in 1956.

That started a run of Madrid scooping the crown for the first five seasons of the competition’s iteration.

Their sixth glory came in 1965/66 before a shocking 30-year drought for the global powerhouse was finally ended with a 1-0 win over Juventus.

The era of the Galacticos coincided with another two wins over the next four seasons before a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Madrid won four European crowns in the 2010s, including a treble between 2016 and 2018.
