Borussia Monchengladbach have given Manchester United encouragement in their move to sign Denis Zakaria, revealing the midfielder is free to leave should the club receive a ‘substantial’ offer before the January transfer deadline.

United interim boss Ralf Rangnick is keen bolster his midfield options for the second half of the season and the likes of Yves Bissouma, Franck Kessie, Aurelien Tchouameni and Declan Rice have all been heavily linked in recent weeks.

But a significantly cheaper alternative has emerged in the shape of Borussia Monchengladbach star Zakaria, 25, who is available for a fee of just €6 million (£5m) this winter.

Zakaria has just six months remaining on his current contract and the Bundesliga outfit have given up hope of convincing the Switzerland international to extend his stay beyond the summer.

Reports emanating from Germany claim United’s chief negotiator, Matt Judge, is speaking to Zakaria’s representatives over a possible move to Old Trafford, with Rangnick said to be an admirer of the defensive-minded midfielder.

The Red Devils are yet to lodge an official bid for Zakaria’s signature, but it’s clear Monchengladbach would be open to the prospect of cashing in on the Swiss while they have the chance this month.

‘It’s not surprising that there’s a lot of speculation around Denis Zakaria and Matthias Ginter at the moment,’ Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl told reporters ahead of the side’s Bundesliga clash with Bayer Leverkusen.

‘However, there haven’t been any concrete offers for either of them. From our side, we know where things stand with them.

‘Both are currently our players and still have six months left on their contracts.

‘But we have always said that if we were to receive a substantial financial offer over the winter that we wouldn’t rule them out leaving the club.’

Zakaria joined Monchengladbach back in 2017 and is enjoying his fifth campaign with the Bundesliga side, making 138 appearances in all competitions in that time.

United are not alone in their interest, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa also keeping close tabs on Zakaria’s situation.

Speaking at a press conference last week, Rangnick admitted he had concerns about a perceived lack of balance in United’s current midfield.

‘It doesn’t help if there is a profile missing,’ the German said.

‘We need to work and want to work with the players we have.

‘We have shown we are able to keep clean sheets with these players but it’s also what we’re doing with the ball and without the ball.

‘Again, we had too many giveaways, too many turnovers in that game.

‘This is also an issue we spoke about with the team – that we shouldn’t make it too easy for the other team to be in possession of the ball, especially when once we have the ball it’s also about responsible decision-making, making the right decision at the right moment.’
