Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo believes Kylian Mbappe will pledge his future to the French giants – despite the front man stalling on signing a new deal at the Parc des Princes.
Mbappe, 22, is one of the most sought after players in Europe after wreaking havoc on defences for club and country since breaking onto the scene in 2017 with Monaco.
The France star was the subject of a late £189million deadline day offer from Real Madrid, which was rejected by PSG who insisted that not only do they not need they money, what was offered was not close to his valuation.
It’s widely claimed Mbappe’s heart, however, is set on a move to the Bernabeu and is expected to join them on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of 2021/222 campaign.
Nevertheless, Leonardo is in no doubt that Mbappe will still be a PSG player next season and beyond, insisting those at the very top of the club ‘can’t see the future without him’.
“The fact that he’s staying, that was the only thing that could happen,” Leonardo told Canal Plus.
“We never thought about doing all this without Kylian. We were not happy with the behaviour of Real Madrid.
“We were clear about the offer they made. It was not enough from our point of view. It was less than what we paid.
“As for their last offer, it never arrived.
“I don’t see Kylian leaving at the end of this season.
“Mbappe’s relationship with PSG is deep. I don’t think anyone here sees the future without him.”
Mbappe has made his name as one of the world’s best players at PSG, hitting 136 goals in 176 appearances for the club since joining from Monaco permanently in 2018.
The superstar has been repeatedly linked with a transfer to Liverpool, too, with fans desperate to see the Frenchman move to Anfield.
Reds supporters believed the club’s new sponsorship with American sportswear giants Nike – who also sponsor Mbappe – would help pave the way for the mega deal to be done.
Jurgen Klopp has even publicly commented about the rumours, but it still appears that speculation is no more than rampant hearsay, with major doubts over whether owners Fenway Sports Group would sanction such a huge deal – even if he might be available on a free next summer.
Back in 2019 when queried about Mbappe rumours, Klopp said: “Buying this calibre of player is difficult. I don’t see any club at the moment who can buy Kylian Mbappe from PSG.
“I don’t see any club, that is how it is. And we are involved in the clubs that cannot do it. It is as easy as that.
“Okay, from a sporting point of view, there are not a lot of reasons to not sign him. What a player he is.
“But it is about the money, of course. No chance. Absolutely no chance.
“Sorry for killing that story.”
