Jamie O’Hara is not fully convinced by Raphael Varane as Manchester United bid to pair the Real Madrid star with Harry Maguire next season.
Talks between United and Madrid are ongoing as the Red Devils look to seal a £50million transfer for the France centre-back.
At 28, Varane has four Champions League titles and a World Cup to his name, establishing himself as one as the finest defenders in world football over a ten-year spell with the Spanish giants.
It is understood Madrid want to keep him, but may be forced to let Varane leave with one year left on his contract.
O’Hara considers Varane a top signing, who would form a ‘world-class’ partnership with England star Maguire, but the former Tottenham midfileder raises some doubts.
Varane was exposed during Real Madrid’s Champions League elimination to Chelsea last season and didn’t cover himself in glory during France’s Euro 2020 campaign.
O’Hara told talkSPORT: “My question would be, why is he leaving Real Madrid?
“Everyone’s making out he’s the best centre-half in the world, so why is he leaving Real Madrid?
“They need a centre-half and if they did get him, it improves the team massively.
“It would be a top signing and it was a position they definitely needed to improve.

“It’s world-class, Varane and Maguire. But I’d worry a little bit potentially for pace. I saw Varane get torn apart by Chelsea in the Champions League.
“Pace would be something that teams would try and exploit against them two.”
Moreover, O’Hara still believes Liverpool will boast a more complete defensive pairing when Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez return from injury.
“You look at Liverpool, when Van Dijk and Gomez are fit, they’ve got pace to get them out of trouble,” he added.
